Dangerous Beauty: The Art of the Shiv [02 Aug 2006|02:23pm]

http://www.designobserver.com/archives/016492.html#

A shiv is a weapon crafted from the limited resources of a prisoner’s closed world. Crudely constructed from such things as spoons, shoelaces and upholstery tacks, shivs lie somewhere between the graceful and the grotesque...

The link has a discussion of shivs from a design/ingenuity perspective, and a link to a slideshow of 12 different shivs confiscated from a maximum security prison in Jersey.

Hi everyone

First post of a main topic here. Just wanted to let everyone know about our completely FREE projects and websites - we run the control-free network (http://www.controlfree.net - a network of sites) and we are spreading the word around.

The control-free network is a resource with free information in text, audio and video files, as well as links to a collective and other helpful websites.

The files not linked to from the website can be downloaded from us for free on SoulSeek (download this great file-sharing program for FREE at http://www.slsknet.org) - and to do this, just add our username, freeinfo.

All of the items we share are free and we take careful precautions not to share copyrighted material, as the fucking feds are always watching our shit (and your shit).

Also, this has been crossposted a bit.

So take care, check us out if you get a chance,
Peace, solidarity

"Meanwhile, I continued to refine my own political philosophy of anarchism, not because I favored 'violence and chaos' with which anarchism is nearly always falsely equated, but because of my opposition to violence and chaos, for which government millitary machines and bureaucratic structures are largely responsible in today's world."

Its ignorant to retrospectively lump together revolutionary groups of the 1960-70's, in particular a group like the SI with the likes of the Weathermen or Motherfuckers. Even when these latter groups were able to develop relevant theoretical positions(which the weathermen never were), their voluntarism prevented them from resembling anything other than a lame spectacle of rebellion.
However derivative it may be to single out the situationists as the only group of their era successful in "making it out of the 20th century",it allows one to distinguish between the sacrificial cretinism of the Weather Underground and the like and those revolutionaries who established relevant criticisms of bourgeois society.

'Robin Hood' gang rob gourmet stores in bid to feed Hamburg's poor
By Tony Paterson

They dress up in pink catsuits, have names like Spider Mum and feel a social obligation to plunder as part of a campaign to help the poor.
Last week the well-heeled citizens of Hamburg’s Altona district got a taste of their antics when 30 of them marched into the city’s luxury “Fresh Paradise Goedeken” supermarket and walked out five minutes later with €15,000 (£10,000) worth of stolen goods.

The gang’s booty included magnums of Champagne at €99 a bottle, filets of Japanese Kobe beef at €108 a kilogram, legs of venison, a salmon and several boxes of Valrhona chocolate.

Before leaving, gang members thrust a bouquet of flowers into the hands of a shop assistant. Attached was a handwritten note which proclaimed: “Survival in the city of millionaires would be impossible without us!” It was signed by “Spider Mum”, “Santa Guevara” and “Multiflex”.

Another note later released by the gang insisted that the haul had been distributed to Hamburg’s needy, to the “social workers, cleaning ladies and minimum-wage earners”. It added: “The places of wealth in this town are as numerous as the opportunities to take it.”

“It was a well-planned robbery,” Carsten Sievers, the store’s manager, said on Friday last week. “Somebody had obviously been in the shop before the main contingent arrived and had already filled up several shopping trolleys.”

Fourteen squad cars and a police helicopter scoured the Altona district for more than an hour after the robbery, but failed to find the perpetrators.
“The gang covered its tracks completely. They act like professionals,” Bodo Franz, the head of a Hamburg police unit investigating the robbery, said.

As they left the scene of the robbery, the gang, clad in masks, catsuits, dark glasses and rubber masks, posed for a group photo outside the supermarket and brandished their booty in front of the camera.

The incident was the latest attack perpetrated by this Robin Hood-style gang of so-called “Spontis”, whose activities have alarmed and baffledthe Hamburg police and the city’s well-to-do. Yet the gang, which refers to itself as “Hamburg for Free”, does not strike often. Its last attack took place almost exactly a year ago, when 40 masked men and women stormed the Süllberg restaurant in the city’s wealthy Blankenese district overlooking the river Elbe.

Diners were appalled as the gang snatched titbits from the plates in front of them and started stuffing the stolen food into their mouths. Other gang members brandished a huge knife and fork made out of silver foil and cardboard above the diners’ heads. A placard declaring “The fat years are over” was strung between pillars in the restaurant.

Mr Franz, who has been trying to track down the “Hamburg for Free” gang since the incident a year ago, said that investigators had merely established that the group was probably made up of a mixture of students and anarchists.

“We don’t know much about them. They are very political yet one of their main motives is fun,” he said. “The problem is that they strike so rarely and so professionally that they are a major job to catch.”

Today's Quote: "The suicide of Hunter S. Thompson, the best-selling writer who pioneered an extravagant form of participatory journalism famously labeled "gonzo," brought to a sober close an era of print journalism rooted in the raucous 1960s."

This list should hopefully continue to grow as more and more praise of HST becomes public...

Fear & Loathing in the Afterlife [21 Feb 2005|07:56pm]

The Good Doctor The Good Doctor

I'm too in shock to write much just yet, but I want to share this in his honor. He will be sorely missed...

Here's one way to draw the Doctor

Some thoughts from Disinfo.com;

Today's Quote: "Gonzo journalism is a highly subjective and extremely personal form of reporting. While Dr. Thompson's writing style has not changed dramatically since the sixties (although his form has), the first piece of writing to be called gonzo was The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved written for Scanlan's and illustrated by the Welsh cartoonist Ralph Steadman. As the deadline approached, and with his article still not done, Dr. Thompson resorted to ripping pages out of his notebook and send them to the editors. What resulted was "gonzo", as Bill Cardoso called it. (Gonzo is really an Italian word for absurdities - gonzagas. Cardoso claimed it was a corruption of the French Canadian word "gonzeaux" which means "shining path". To my knowledge, no such word exists)."
~~ Gonzo, What Is Gonzo Journalism?

Our 'wicked warlock' Richard Metzger has spoken of how one of Disinformation's goals is to bridge the gap between the counterculture's old guard and what Jason Louv calls Generation Hex. We're saddened by the news that 'gonzo' journalist Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide on Sunday. HST was a pivotal influence during my student media stint, when E. Jean Carroll's biography Hunter was passed around the editorial office. He also toured Australia in the mid-1970s after the Fear and Loathing myth had taken hold. Now I'm numbed. What's often forgotten, but that is evident when reading the early works in The Great Shark Hunt, was HST's mastery of observation. 'Gonzo' reportage paralleled the innovation of participant-observer research in anthropology: a mastery of craft, detail and action to change situations. Reading these early works is like witnessing Crowleyan magical exercises transplanted to Los Angeles or the 1972 political campaign trail. Disinfonauts engaged in social change can also learn from HST's drug-crazed persona and how the myth became reality. This is very sad news, but maybe it might inspire some of you to carry on HST's spirit in your own projects. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Happy Gonzo Day!!!!

New LJ Community [16 Feb 2005|12:06pm]

The community Breaking Bars! recognizes that prisons serve no purpose other than to allow power mongering and a vast amount of discrimination in our penal system, the deprivation of prisoner senses and constant neglect, horrific experimentations, abuse perpetuated by guard officials and prisoner-on-prisoner behind bars...the list is endless. These institutions have heightened the level of violence in our society, and marginalized people have become serious targets. Budgets for social programs and shelters are being slashed, leaving an open door for more domestic and overt personal violence. We need to end our reliance on prisons, police, and surveillance to solve our economic, social, and politcal problems.

I made this community (which is not very active, but i'd like it to be!) dedicated to Phoolan Devi, the once most feared bandit of India. I know she was unfortunately murdered a few years ago. But i think that her spirit and strength should never be forgotten. There's not enough people who know about her and I want to spread the word about this amazing woman that survived and fought back for so many years. There's only 27 livejournalers with her name in their interests. How unfortunate is that?

Feel free to advertise anywhere. The community is phoolan_devi

Other than that, i think this community is interesting. I'm glad it exists and i'm even more pleased that Phoolan Devi is listed as one of the interests of this community.

Deputy fired for naughty pics

OZARK, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas sheriff's deputy was fired after his wife posed nude next to his patrol car.

A computer disc containing photos of Damon Gregory's wife posing near the patrol vehicle surfaced at the Franklin County Sheriff's office in early December. Gregory was fired Dec. 14, and the reason was released Thursday. A supervisor who knew of the photographs was demoted from sergeant to road deputy.

"As soon as this came to our attention, the sheriff took action," said Chief Deputy James Hamilton.

Gregory said he won't appeal his firing for violating department policy and conduct regulations.

"The sheriff's department wants to apologize to each and every citizen for any embarrassment or loss of confidence," Hamilton said.
